FABnyc's new RESPONSE series: show work, get peer feedback [UPDATE]

Sign up now* for a spot in RESPONSE, FABnyc's series of sessions (part of The Sustainable Artist Toolkit), intended to foster a culture of support and care in our artist community. I'm honored to be the facilitator for the launch of what we hope will be a useful, ongoing resource.

The series offers opportunities for participants to sign up to present work and to respond to those presentations.

Spots to share your work will be given on a first-come first-serve basis. We would like to adopt a “pay-it-forward” model and ask that artists that wish to present work also sign up for an alternate session as a responder.

At RESPONSE, artists share work in development and receive feedback from peers in safe, supportive space. We will be asking the presenting artists to give us a brief idea of the kind of feedback they would find most useful. In general, we hope you will approach this time with respect and empathy for your fellow artists and offer the kind of responses and reflections you would seek for your own work. This is not a space for judging the merit of artistic product but for sharing what you’ve experienced and asking questions that will help artists see their work through your eyes and move it forward. Please feel free to give us your helpful suggestions to make future RESPONSE sessions work well for everyone.

Arts On Site is a brand new non-profit organization offering affordable rental space to all art forms, creating a home for the arts with an aim to build community.

You're invited to an Open House on Sunday, October 23, 2pm-10pm, hosted by Arts on Site in partnership with Fourth Arts Block (FAB) and Danspace Project at St. Marks Church to celebrate the launch of Arts on Site. Get to meet the Arts On Site team as well as the community of teachers and artists holding events and classes at this new East Village space for the arts.

2-7pm OPEN HOUSE and DEMONSTRATIONS

Find out about upcoming events, classes, and workshops. Visitors are invited to explore Arts on Site's newly renovated studios and participate in a wide variety of sample classes lead by its current roster of artists.

7-10pm SOCIAL HOUR and PERFORMANCES

In the spirit of collaboration, Arts on Site has teamed up with Fourth Arts Block (FAB) and Dancespace Project at St. Marks Church to present a short evening of performances. After the performances, enjoy a drink at a social hour with fellow artists, local business owners and community organizations from the area.

Arts On Site is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting artists of all disciplines by offering affordable studio rental space and a diverse calendar of classes, events, and workshops. FAB is excited to bring to you The Sustainable Artist Toolkit – a series of workshops led by A. Nia Edwards-Austin, Eva Yaa Asantewaa, Kendra Ross, and Sydnie Mosley, for artists, cultural workers, creativity seekers… and everyone in between. Learn to tell your stories, share resources, activate the community, cultivate thoughtful responsiveness — all while working towards a generative and caring ecosystem.

And I'm excited to be part of the team bringing this new initiative to our arts community. You'll hear more about my part of it in coming months but, first up:

BodyBusiness Resource Sharing: getting what you NEED with what you HAVE

Wednesday, Sept 21, 7-9pm

Through a series of artist-guided activities, SLMDances will share practices that work towards a cooperative economy based on trust, value transparency and accountability, all while honoring individual voices. In school, in our jobs, in society, we are taught “resources are scarce” — but what if the skills, goods, services, and/or opportunities we already possess becomes the central resource of worth instead of money?

Artists, cultural workers, makers: let’s fully embody a vision of a community that has mastered the art of sharing in order to negotiate obstacles and achieve common goals! In this session, reflect on what you have & what you need, equitably distribute resources, experience how a cooperative economy operates, and together, find ways to shift the culture in our day-to-day.

This model was co-conceived with Our Goods and elevates a vision that values artists’ creative labor and production while decentralizing money as the only source of real worth.

Want to meet with a group of peers once a month (4 meetings over 4 months) to discuss challenges and possibilities in your life and work? Connect the Blocks: Resource Sharing in NYC Dance

Join Dance/NYC, Fourth Arts Block, OurGoods, and the wider dance community to discuss resource sharing in NYC dance. Money for dance making is scarce. What happens when we make dance using resources other than dollars? What are our opportunities for creating economies of collaboration and combination? New Yorkers are responding to these questions with innovative models for identifying, leveraging and sharing resources to make their work and achieve their missions. This Town Hall will showcase some of those solutions, instigate a larger conversation about strategies and tactics for sharing, and close with a live barter meetup, including a crash course on the fundamentals of bartering and a mapping of the needs and haves in the room.

Intended to advance economies of collaboration and combination in NYC dance, the Town Hall will launch Connect the Blocks, a joint Fourth Arts Block and OurGoods initiative to strengthen the resource sharing culture for independent dance makers across the City. Made possible with leadership support from the National Endowment for the Arts, Connect the Blocks will offer a suite of workshops, events and online resources to advance resource- and capacity-sharing as a replicable and sustainable model for cultural production.

Please share your thoughts on resource sharing on DanceNYC.org. What happens when we make dance using resources other than dollars?

Fourth Arts Block (FABnyc) was founded in 2001 as the nonprofit leadership organization for the East 4th Street Cultural District, a historic and vibrant arts corridor in Manhattan between Second Avenue and Bowery. Now a neighborhood-wide coalition of 26 arts and community groups, FABnyc drives cultural and community development, while preserving the Lower East Side's rich heritage and creative energy.

OurGoods.org is a barter network for creative people. Online and in person, we facilitate the barter of skills, space, labor, and objects. The site matches barter partners, provides accountability tools, and offers technical assistance resources. It is an instigator for generosity, a locus of empowerment, and an innovative model for supporting the work of artists.

On the Commons (OTC) is a commons movement strategy center founded in 2001. Our purpose is to activate the emergence of a commons-based society by: building and bringing visibility to the commons movement; initiating and catalyzing commons work that focuses on Commons-based solutions; and developing and encouraging commons leadership.

13P (Thirteen Playwrights, Inc.) is a collective of playwrights that realizes full productions of new plays. The resources of the company are placed at the disposal of the playwright at work, who serves as the company's artistic director during the production of her play. The mission calls for the company to produce 13 plays, one by each founding member, before the organization's planned implosion in 2012. The production model created by 13P has been replicated around the world with its encouragement.

Dance/NYC is a branch of Dance/USA, the national service organization for professional dance. Dance/NYC's mission is to sustain and advance the professional dance field in New York City-serving as the voice, guide and infrastructure architect for all local dance artists and managers. The organization achieves this mission through: advocacy, research and convening.
