Clark Center NYC pays tribute to Thelma Hill

On Tuesday, November 17, Clark Center NYC and 651Arts will join forces at MOCADA in a symposium to honor the life and legacy of acclaimed dance educator Thelma Hill.

CCNYC Steering Committee member Jill Williams writes, "Thelma was one of the architects of Clark Center and a major influence and mentor."

"Delores Brown who danced with Thelma in The New York Negro Ballet will moderate.  She'll be joined by Otis Sallid who began studying with Thelma as a teenager and continues to work as a choreographer, producer (recently with the James Brown project, Get on the Good Foot at the Apollo Theater), Mickey Davidson who was a student of Thelma's at Clark Center and works as a dancer, choreographer and director of her own company and Kathe Sandler who will share her short documentary gem, Remembering Thelma."

Save the date to honor Clark Center's history: April 17

Celebrate the historic Clark Center for the Performing Arts--
founded by Alvin Ailey in 1959 in New York as a multi-racial, multi-ethnic arts community--at Fridays at Noon at 92Y.

For 30 years Clark Center trained dancers, encouraged emerging companies and developed new choreographic talent. Among the choreographers and companies that performed there are Alvin Ailey, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Eleo Pomare, Anna Sokolow, Mimi Garrard, Donald McKayle, Kazuko Hirabayashi, Meredith Monk, Laura Dean, Ballet Hispanico, Chuck Davis, Sounds in Motion, Senta Driver, Bill T Jones, May O’Donnel, Gus Solomons, Capoeiras Bahia, Doug Varone and Urban Bush Women.

This afternoon event will include live dancing, film, photographs and a panel discussion.

The new website for Clark Center NYC--an organization dedicated to preserving the history and legacy of Alvin Ailey's multicultural Clark Center for the Performing Arts--invites you to contribute to its compilation of personal remembrances.

Through a preeminent faculty of instructors, an extensive scholarship program, and a philosophy of accessibility, Clark Center provided an environment that produced performing artists with far-reaching influence on the dance world. Students were given both training and performance opportunities with an outstanding faculty including Alvin Ailey, Fred Benjamin, Pepsi Bethel, Anna Sokolow, and Charles Moore.

By preserving this history through a website, documentation, symposia and presentations; dancers, scholars, artists, and the public will be able to learn about all who helped shape the dance world then and now.

Join Loretta Abbott, distinguished dancer and choreographer, for an afternoon Q&A on her enduring career in theater, her connections to Clark Center for the Performing Arts, and the legacy of Black performers and dance companies. Abbott will be in conversation with Clark Center alumni, Sheila Rohan and Jill Williams. Materials from the collections of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts will be displayed.

Abbott, an accomplished dancer, actress, singer and choreographer was an early member of the Alvin Ailey Dance Company, performed on Broadway, in film and television, and in concert in partnership with Al Perryman and her own solo program, Woman of Color.

This event is the initial presentation of Clark Center NYC as part of its mission to preserve the history and legacy of the Clark Center for the Performing Arts, a distinguished arts organization in New York City from 1959-1989.
