Memories: FAB x MR DANCE BLOCK SALON Spring '17

Abrons Arts Center -- March 28, 2017
facilitated by Eva Yaa Asantewaa

Fourth Arts Block (FABnyc) paired up Movement Research for their first collaborative Dance Block Salon. The organizations invited artists from their respective communities to show work in an atmosphere of non-judgmental sharing, radical support and community building.

I was honored and thrilled to be asked to facilitate the evening and guide the feedback sessions.

Artists showing work included Rina Espiritu, Jenny Boissiere & Dancers, Cain Coleman of ColemanCollective and Shantelle Courvoisier Jackson.

Our final salon in the series will be held on Wednesday, May 3 (2-4pm) at Arts on Site. (Info and registration here)

Come join our friendly circle! We’re looking forward to seeing you!

FABnyc's new RESPONSE series: show work, get peer feedback [UPDATE]

Sign up now* for a spot in RESPONSE, FABnyc's series of sessions (part of The Sustainable Artist Toolkit), intended to foster a culture of support and care in our artist community. I'm honored to be the facilitator for the launch of what we hope will be a useful, ongoing resource.

The series offers opportunities for participants to sign up to present work and to respond to those presentations.

Spots to share your work will be given on a first-come first-serve basis. We would like to adopt a “pay-it-forward” model and ask that artists that wish to present work also sign up for an alternate session as a responder.

At RESPONSE, artists share work in development and receive feedback from peers in safe, supportive space. We will be asking the presenting artists to give us a brief idea of the kind of feedback they would find most useful. In general, we hope you will approach this time with respect and empathy for your fellow artists and offer the kind of responses and reflections you would seek for your own work. This is not a space for judging the merit of artistic product but for sharing what you’ve experienced and asking questions that will help artists see their work through your eyes and move it forward. Please feel free to give us your helpful suggestions to make future RESPONSE sessions work well for everyone.

Available salon dates are:

Mar 1, Apr 12, Apr 26 and May 3--all Wednesdays, 2-4pm

NOTE: The March 1 salon has been cancelled.

Coming in January: free Writers Circle for POC arts writers

Sign up for my free dance and performance WRITERS CIRCLE sponsored by FABnyc, starting in January!

Are you dissatisfied with the state of critical writing about dance and performance? Writers Circle supports artists of color, across the spectrum of movement-based performing arts, as they practice and share clear, effective writing in response to performance. Previous writing on the arts is not required, but you should have basic facility with written expression.

East Village locations. For complete schedule and location details and to sign up, click here.

FABnyc launches The Sustainable Artist Toolkit

The Sustainable Artist Toolkit

 (#ArtistToolkit)
Artists, Cultural Workers, Revelers & Explorers of creative expression: DON’T PANIC.

FAB is excited to bring to you The Sustainable Artist Toolkit – a series of workshops led by A. Nia Edwards-Austin, Eva Yaa Asantewaa, Kendra Ross, and Sydnie Mosley, for artists, cultural workers, creativity seekers… and everyone in between. Learn to tell your stories, share resources, activate the community, cultivate thoughtful responsiveness — all while working towards a generative and caring ecosystem.
And I'm excited to be part of the team bringing this new initiative to our arts community. You'll hear more about my part of it in coming months but, first up:

BodyBusiness Resource Sharing: getting what you NEED with what you HAVE

led by Sydnie L. Mosley and SLMDances

Wednesday, Sept 21, 7-9pm
Through a series of artist-guided activities, SLMDances will share practices that work towards a cooperative economy based on trust, value transparency and accountability, all while honoring individual voices. In school, in our jobs, in society, we are taught “resources are scarce” — but what if the skills, goods, services, and/or opportunities we already possess becomes the central resource of worth instead of money?

Artists, cultural workers, makers: let’s fully embody a vision of a community that has mastered the art of sharing in order to negotiate obstacles and achieve common goals! In this session, reflect on what you have & what you need, equitably distribute resources, experience how a cooperative economy operates, and together, find ways to shift the culture in our day-to-day.

This model was co-conceived with Our Goods and elevates a vision that values artists’ creative labor and production while decentralizing money as the only source of real worth.

Hmmm....an Idea Party! Good idea!

Fourth Arts Block (FABnyc) announces...
In partnership with OurGoods, we have launched Connect the Blocks, an initiative to help dance makers and artists learn to share and barter resources in an increasingly competitive economic climate. The notion is that, by finding ways to share resources, we can accomplish more together than we would by staying in continued competition for scarce resources.

Upcoming Connect the Blocks Idea Parties--Wednesday, October 10 (6:30pm) and Thursday, October 25 (6:30pm)--will be facilitated meetups where participants brainstorm practical solutions to artistic and production challenges.
Location: Downtown Art, 59-61 East 4th Street, 7th Floor, Manhattan

RSVP: rsvp@fabnyc.org
Get more information on these two idea parties on Facebook here.
