New York City has a new way to explore its vibrant and diverse dance scene: Inside New York City Dance with Ashani Mfuko, airing Fridays, 10:30pm EST on Manhattan Neighborhood Network's Culture Channel (Time Warner Cable 67 | RCN 85 | FiOS 36).

Mfuko's program will feature in-depth interviews, health and wellness tips and the latest dance industry news. In addition, Inside New York City Dance will soon launch an iPhone/iPad app, and the show will be available for streaming live online at http://mnn.org. (Simply click on the “Culture Channel” link.)

The first season will spotlight the Bessie Awards, the Joffrey Ballet School, Ailey II, The Dance Theatre of Harlem, Full Circle Soul Productions at Lincoln Center (Lincoln Center Out Of Doors), The Hip-Hop Dance Conservatory, The Ladies of Hip-Hop Festival, Taylor Gordon (professional ballet dancer and member of Exit 12 Dance Company), The Young Choreographer’s Festival, Dr. Linda Hamilton (Dance Magazine columnist and clinical psychologist specializing in wellness for performers) and more.

Merce Cunningham Event for iPad

Between 2001 and 2007 Merce Cunningham choreographed a series of performances for the visual and performing arts journal 2wice. Working with photographers Katherine Wolkoff, Christian Witkin, and Joachim Ladefoged, creative director Abbott Miller created a series of publications that fuse choreography, photography and design. This series is here adapted to the unique context of a digital tablet, and enhanced with three newly-created videos featuring Cunningham dancers Jonah Bokaer and Holley Farmer. The project honors Cunningham’s lifelong devotion to new ways of seeing dance, and is supported by the 2wice Arts Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports the visual and performing arts.

Dances for an iPhone, created, choreographed and produced by Richard Daniels, offers an innovative way to look at and disseminate dance on camera. Mr. Daniels brings modern dance to a wider audience in this App for iPhones, iPads, iPod Touches while simultaneously creating a new category of Apps with purely cultural content.

The current dances, roughly three to five minutes in length, feature performances by Carmen de Lavallade, Deborah Jowitt, Margie Gillis, Risa Steinberg, Christine Wright and more.
