New InfiniteBody policy re: Kickstarter campaigns

Dear InfiniteBody readers,

In recent months, I've received a good number of Kickstarter appeals by email or Facebook message. Often these come with personal requests for me to help out by publicizing Kickstarter campaigns on this blog.

Initially, I was reluctant to post any of these announcements, because there are numerous active campaigns out there. I neither wanted to be expected to post every one I received or heard about, nor did I want to be seen as playing favorites by promoting projects that might personally interest me. I worried about this.

Over time, I did post a few--even quite recently. But today, I'm announcing that I will no longer post Kickstarter announcements on InfiniteBody.

I support your efforts to fund important creative projects. If you share your appeals via social media, I'll be happy to re-post or re-tweet something that personally strikes me as "insanely great." And I wish all of you the very best.

Thanks for understanding and respecting this policy decision.

Emmy-award winning documentary filmmaker and activist Catherine Gund (What's On Your Plate?) is currently working with Elizabeth Streb on a film about the life and work of the world-famous "Evil Knievel of dance."

Wellfleet, MA set to welcome new dance fest

Fleet Moves Dance Festival by The Movement Party

Pioneering dancers Zena Bibler and Katie Schetlick plan to bring a new dance festival to the little fishing town of Wellfleet on Cape Cod. Bibler writes, "We are serving a community that has little to no dance programming, but we are also benefiting from the opportunity to create singular dance experiences out in nature--dunes, kettle ponds, broken down railroad bridges...."

We are bringing a really great team of dancers (mostly from New York City) to engage in a residency for the first four days in order to create new work and class structures for the festival over the following four days. Some collaborators include Brandin Steffensen, Jeremy Finch, Abigail Levine, Stephanie Fungsang, members of the Yaa Samar Dance Company, and more. Plus we'll be teaming up with local teachers and performers to create a festival that really is in, around, and for the town of Wellfleet.

Fleet Moves, the co-directors promise, will "set the town in motion with all-day programming that includes daily classes, indoor and outdoor performances, a visual art exhibition, film screenings, and a closing night dance party."

Filmmaker Livingston looks at death and loss

We do everything we can to avoid addressing the human fact of impermanence and death. Award-winning documentary filmmaker Jennie Livingston (Paris is Burning), who lost several close family members within a handful of years, now turns her storytelling skills towards her own experience of loss in Earth Camp One.

Livingston has launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise the funds to complete her film. In her appeal, she wrote:

"...I’m all for films that encourage people to act. But it’s surprising that just as social media and the blogosphere are revitalizing first-person storytelling (in ways that run from irritating to brilliant), first-person stories, in film, are a tremendous challenge to make. Companies, foundations, and investors fear that a work that’s “personal” is, by definition, not relevant to audiences or to broader social goals. In this way, film is trailing behind both conventional and Internet publishing; as when, thirty years ago, a memoir not written by a movie star or president was unlikely to find a publisher. Back then, the literary and commercial successes of best-selling memoirs by authors like Dave Eggers and Marjane Satrapi were unimaginable."

More cheekily, she posted this on her Facebook page:

"What is more cool than a film about impermanence and death?!!! Isn't that why 13 year old boys wear shirts with skulls???"
