Audition/Scholarship News:

Fly-by-Night Dance Theater's annual scholarship audition for dancers of color  is coming this Sunday, January 17 (4:30-7pm). This free audition class celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King Day. A few students will be selected for a course of study, under scholarship, with Julie Ludwick's Williamsburg-based aerial dance troupe.

Artistic Director Sydnie L. Mosley seeks dancers who believe in and uphold our Core Values: DREAMING, ACTIVISM, AUTHENTICITY, INDIVIDUALITY, COMMUNITY, LEARNING. Dancers must have strong technical foundation in a range of modern dance techniques including release and contact improvisation. Experience with some West African dance traditions a plus. Dancers also should enjoy creating collaboratively, must be willing to take risks & must be unafraid to use their voices.

Compensation and benefits include: paid performances, company class at every rehearsal, professional development opportunities including teacher training and support for achieving personal goals, community building.

Commitment includes: Rehearsals every Tuesday/ Thursday after 5pm. Occasional additional rehearsals as needed. Professional Development meetings first Sunday of the month 2-4pm.

Pre-season: May-August 2015 (July OFF)*

Performance Season: September 2015-April 2016

Annual Scholarship Audition Class

Fly-by-Night Dance Theater will hold their annual FREE scholarship audition class for dancers of color. The class is open to all serious dancers who are interested in aerial dance training. A few dancers will be selected from the audition class to study Aerial Dance with Fly-by-Night Dance Theater.

Audition: Pro, non-pro performers wanted for Thierry Niang's "Spring"

The Invisible Dog will bring French director and choreographer Thierry Niang to Brooklyn for two weeks to create a production of SPRING, inspired by Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, working with fifteen local participants, aged 60 to 100.

Niang is looking for 15 local professional and non-professional seniors (ages 60 to 100) of all backgrounds and levels of ability to comprise the ensemble.

This will be a very special, one-time only performance--and a meaningful
experience for all involved.

All performers are paid and provided a meal the day of the show.

Julie Ludwick's Fly-By-Night Dance Theater--noted for its combination of modern and aerial dance--invites dancers of color to audition on Sunday, January 12 (4:15-6:15pm). The company's free audition class is open to all serious dancers of color who are interested in exploring aerial dance.

Ludwick writes, "Each year we pick a small group of dancers to do a 3-class workshop with us and, from that group, we select a few dancers to continue to study with us through the year."

ASÉ Dance Theatre Collective is a professional neo-folkloric performance ensemble that is dedicated to preserving the past, present, and future of the African presence in the "New World.' Since 2000, ASÉ has presented work that links modem dance, original vernacular movement and traditional dance theater from the African Diaspora to conceptual ideas in the human experience.

This audition is for hardworking professional dancers of color with the stamina, physical strength, and technique to contribute something powerful to our collective. Freestyle dancers welcome! Male dancers are strongly encouraged to audition! Our performances are not limited to the concert stage.

That said, we are also looking for open-minded, adventurous people that dance about more than just dance, have a strong connection to African culture and respect the intricacy of traditional movement.
Dancers with intermediate to advanced training in contemporary modem dance, African based dance forms (specifically Afro-Haitian, Cuban, Puerto Rican, Dominican and Brazilian) and unique styles of movement are encouraged to come through! We are looking for female and male dancers to learn company repertory for upcoming spring and summer performances. Permanent positions in the collective will be offered to those who demonstrate consistency and exceptional performance quality.

Most performances are paid. Currently we do not have the funding to pay dancers for rehearsal time.

We need dancers who can vocalize, hold a note, hold the rhythm, hold their balance, slice through space, and breathe where there seems to be none.

College seeks performers for new opera on Fannie Lou Hamer

Activist Fannie Lou Hamer in 1964

Mount Holyoke College (South Hadley, MA) plans auditions in Boston and New York for a new opera composed by Mary D. Watkins on the life of the renowned civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer. Dark River, The Fannie Lou Hamer Story will premiere in April 2014 at the college to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the Bill of Civil Rights. It will be conducted by Tian Hui Ng, directed by Darryl V. Jones and produced by Martha Richards.

This is a paid production.

Auditions will be held at Mount Holyoke College in the afternoon on October 20.

Casting call for "Then She Fell" [UPDATE]

I'm just able to get to a lot of email requests and information now. So, please forgive me for getting the word out late about this casting call. Due to post-Sandy conditions and delays, I would suggest that if you're still interested in this project, contact TRP and find out if you can still apply.

Third Rail Projects is looking for performers for the extension of their immersive work, Then She Fell, as well as future site-specific projects slated for 2013.  It is important for performers to be available from mid-December until mid-March to be part of a second cast for Then She Fell.

We are seeking performers with: a strong contemporary dance background and at least three years of professional performance experience; comfort and experience  moving in a site-specific context, for example on architecture (furniture, walls, tables, staircases); the ability to move athletically in aggressive, heightened choreography as well as an ability to execute simple, uninflected pedestrian actions; experience with dynamic partnering;  a willingness and comfort using voice and speech; and the ability to embody a character and interact personally and in close proximity to audience members.

Although we are looking to meet a range of dancers and performers, our most immediate needs for Then She Fell have specific requirements. We are currently seeking two female dancers with shoulder length (or longer), medium to dark brown hair and one male dancer with excellent partnering skills. If you do not meet these criteria, you are still encouraged to apply as we are also casting for future projects at this time.

Audition for Aviles: female singers with sense of humor

Arthur Aviles Typical Theatre is preparing a new musical theatre/dance work called Super Maeva de Oz which takes inspiration from The Wizard of Oz to tell the story of a young Latina lesbian coming out in the South Bronx in 1977. The piece will need a chorus made up of 6 to 12 participants that backs up the actress. The songs include cursing, humorous and sexually explicit references.

Arthur Aviles Typical Theatre is seeking singers for the chorus who have: a good singing voice (formal training a plus); can sing with Spanish/ Latina accent; and OK with being perceived as Queer.

We are having auditions on Saturday November 28, from 10am to 12pm and from 6pm to 9pm. Also on Sunday, November 29th from 5pm to 10pm.

Audition will be at BAAD! The Bronx Academy of Arts & Dance, 841 Barretto Street, Bronx, NY 10474.

Preview performance of the songs will take place the second week of February at BAAD!
