The Dance Program at Sarah Lawrence College is seeking a new Director who is an accomplished teacher for our distinguished program in Dance. The successful candidate will be a prominent and active dance artist with proven achievement in choreography and performance, an established teaching practice and administrative experience. An advanced degree in the field is desired, or its professional equivalent. Familiarity with dance in a liberal arts curriculum for both undergraduate and graduate students is essential. Possibility of early tenure review. Starting date August 2016.

Documentary filmmaker Nel Shelby has crafted a love letter to the power of dance and the power of learning with her new film, PS DANCE!

Narrated by veteran TV journalist Paula Zahn, the hour-long film takes viewers inside several New York City public schools (K-12) that incorporate dance programs into their educational vision--still a rarity in US schools.

We meet a host of lucky students and their gifted teachers--among them, Patricia Dye of Brooklyn's Science Skills High School for Science, Technology and the Creative Arts and Catherine Gallant of Lower Manhattan's PS 89--who make a persuasive case for the value of dance in the curriculum, with clear benefits far beyond the boosting of academic performance. Yes, teachers can use creative movement to reinforce class material students need to learn, but dance also enhances imagination, body awareness and wellness, confidence, the ability to give and take respectful feedback and to collaborate with others as dance artists do. Students need not aim for professional careers in dance to acquire habits and skills that will serve them well in all aspects of life.

Last evening, dancer and community organizer Maria Bauman led a rousing community movement workshop ("Amplification and Scale"), an event of the Community Action Hub at Gibney Dance Center. Alas, the ninety minutes flew by, certainly not time enough to deeply explore Bauman's resourceful tools for engaging diverse communities around racism and other social justice issues. However, a roomful of people, who either did or did not identify as professional dancers, got completely caught up in the joy of our bodies' expressiveness, interacting with one another in an atmosphere of trust, permission and play. Wouldn't it be cool for Bauman to come back and launch an ongoing group that could bond and expand on this promising beginning?

Job Opening: Hampshire College seeks Assistant Professor of Modern/Contemporary Dance

Assistant Professor of Modern/Contemporary Dance

Hampshire College, an independent, innovative liberal arts institution and member of the Five College Consortium, invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor of Modern/ Contemporary Dance to begin July 1, 2014.

We seek a dance artist/scholar actively engaged in the practice and theory of modern/contemporary dance with a record of excellence as a performer-choreographer and educator. Excellence in teaching modern/contemporary dance technique and choreography-composition at all levels of instruction is required. Desirable subfields include Laban Movement Analysis, dance science, and additional dance techniques. Other areas of interest such as experimental or site-specific choreography, dance in the community, and dance history and performance studies would be welcome. The ideal candidate will integrate technical, creative, historical, cultural and scientific dimensions of dance into his or her teaching, and will have a broad knowledge of current practices and discourse in dance. An MFA (or its equivalent) in dance is required. Applicants should demonstrate an aptitude for innovative undergraduate teaching and advising, and the ability to work effectively within a culturally diverse and multidisciplinary campus community. In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will be expected to choreograph/set work on students, serve as artistic director of dance concerts, mentor student choreography and research, collaborate on the vision, design and management of the Hampshire Dance Program and help advance the mission of the Five College Dance Department.

The Hampshire College Dance Program is a member of the Five College Dance Department, comprised of the programs at Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. This consortium makes the FCDD the largest dance program in New England. The FCDD curriculum encourages students to balance performance and creative studies with a broad understanding of the historical and cultural contexts of different dance traditions. They may shape their studies in either traditional or interdisciplinary ways, reflecting the wide range of career options and new directions of the contemporary field. The Department offers over 100 courses a year, numerous performing opportunities and a performing arts calendar equal to a major metropolis.
