2014 [B.A.R.] OPEN PROPOSAL Research/Advocacy/Criticism/Exhibition

Following our first gathering in 2013, Theaster Gates, Carrie Mae Weems, Sarah Workneh, Marlease Bushnell, and Eliza Myrie came together to share what we had heard from participants and our own feelings on what could continue to happen with the Black Artists Retreat. As we prepare for [B.A.R.] Chicago 2014 we are seeking proposals that explore a range of topics related to black cultural production in its many forms.

We identified four focus areas that can lend structure to the concerns of the community without overdetermining what the community itself thinks is important. Proposals, while open, should fall under one of the following four categories: 

Research/Advocacy/Criticism/Exhibition

This open proposal is an opportunity for individuals to share their own thoughts on where our cultural production stands. What are the issues that we now face? What are the themes, concepts, and ideas that underscore critical thought and artist’s production?

Assembling a diverse and intergenerational group of proposal reviewers will allow us to assess where there is consensus. The invited panelists will meet in New York City to review proposals and select the presenters for [B.A.R.] Chicago 2014. Those proposals selected will have the period from May to August to expand their abstract in order to more fully present their ideas during the August retreat.

Please consider how your proposal can contribute to and foster the discussion of concerns facing the entire [B.A.R.] community, your proposal may consider individual presentations or group presentations and panels.
At this time there is no funding for the realization of proposals.

2013 Choreographic Commission

The Dance Department at Temple University invites choreographers to submit proposals for its 2013 choreographic commission that speaks to the theme of Reflection:Response.

As dance artists, our embodied learning and creative practice demands that we are able to think and react through multiple intelligences and we invite you to explore this through the concept of Reflection:Response. Whether you locate your work in somatic investigation or socio-political inquiry, we welcome dance-makers from all backgrounds. For further information about the Reflection:Response series, please see the accompanying sheet.

The Commission Brief:

You are asked to create a new work that speaks to the theme of Reflection:Response that will be presented on October 25 & 26, 2013.

Although it is not obligatory, we welcome any opportunities to include Temple students as part of this choreographic commission. Students may be selected through audition and numbers included are entirely at the discretion of the choreographer.

You will be given a $5000 grant towards this and you will have regular access to rehearsal space throughout June-August 2103. Unfortunately, we are not in a position to offer travel, accommodation or per diems.

You have the option to stage the work in the Conwell Theater at Temple University Main Campus or at an alternative site within the Main Campus or North Philadelphia area. We can provide stage management, lighting and sound technicians if you choose to present the work in Conwell Theater.

In addition to the performance, you will also be asked to offer a master class and lecture-demonstration to students in the Dance Department in mid October 2013.

Proposal Guidelines:

Please submit a 2-page application as an email attachment (with the email subject heading Reflection:Response 2013 Commission) that states:

·      Name, address, telephone and e-mail address
·      A short performance biography
·      A brief description of the artistic aims of your proposed work with a clear articulation of how it speaks to the theme of Reflection:Response
·      A breakdown of your budget
·      Anticipated technical requirements

In addition to the written application, you are asked to provide a 10-minute sample of your work (please send a link to You Tube or Vimeo) outlining why you would like us to look at this particular section.

Summer (Donna, that is) into fall with BAAD!

BAAD! (Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance) seeks choreographers who love to love Donna Summer for a special evening devoted to the late disco diva. Here's their announcement:

BAAD! is honoring Donna Summer as part of the 2012 BlakTino Performance Series by putting together an evening of dance at BAAD! on Saturday, October 13 at 8pm. We hope you can join the group of Bronx choreographers influenced and inspired by her music genius.

BAAD! can offer you an honorarium of $125 for a ten minute -->or less piece<---- (aprox.) as well as 4 free hours of rehearsal and discounted tickets. (2 complementary tickets and 10 $10 tickets)

Please indicate which song you will be choosing, below is the list of taken songs in an effort to not repeat songs.

Need space for dance? boo-koo!

a space grant program hosted by Gibney Dance Center

Gibney Dance is pleased to announce a call for proposals for boo-koo, an exciting new space grant and community “give back” initiative for emerging choreographers. boo-koo is slang for the French word beaucoup, and our new space grant program is based on the belief that everyone has something they need (e.g. space to create) as well as something to offer (e.g. time and talent).

Gibney Dance Center will supply artists with 40 hours of free space to develop new work.  In exchange the participating artists will “give back” by designing and implementing a special project that will serve the dance or social services communities.

TIMELINE

February 29: Application Deadline

March 1 - 15: A panel of arts and community leaders will convene to review applications

March 15: Notification

April - June: Space Grant Period – 40 hours of space awarded.

April 28: Deadline for Community Project “Giveback” Proposal Concept

June 30: Deadline for Community Project “Giveback” Project Completion

boo-koo grantees will receive 40 hours of space to be used within a three-month period. As necessary, space grant recipients will be provided with informal direction and technical assistance in developing their “give back” projects.

• Two Unedited Work Sample DVDs, each clearly labeled and cued to 5-minute excerpts (no promotional videos please!)

Tobacco Warehouse--Request for Proposals

Brooklyn Bridge Park is seeking proposals for the rehabilitation and adaptive re-use of the former Tobacco Warehouse for cultural, educational or community purposes.

The Tobacco Warehouse is an historic 25,000 square foot open air structure with stabilized exterior walls, located in the Empire Fulton Ferry Park section of Brooklyn Bridge Park on Water Street between Dock Street and New Dock Street in Dumbo. The purpose of this Request for Proposals is to solicit proposals from Lead Tenants, who are interested in leasing, redeveloping, and being the primary occupant of the Site as a cultural facility with community uses, and from subtenants, interested in using the new facility, which would allow the facility to provide a wide array of cultural programming.

Proposals are due no later than 3pm on October 18, 2010. An information sessions and site tour will be held at 1pm on September 14, 2010 at the Tobacco Warehouse (directions)
