Triskelion Arts plans move to Greenpoint

Triskelion Arts, the Williamsburg, Brooklyn center for dance announced its signing of a 10-year lease on a former body shop in Greenpoint at the corner of Calyer and Banker Streets. The organization will move during Summer 2014, but the build-out of the new location will begin next month. The current site of Triskelion’s operations at 118 N. 11th Street will continue to operate until June 2014. "All scheduled performances, rehearsals, and classes at the current location will not be affected," says Artistic Director Abby Bender. "Studio and theater rentals will continue as usual through May.

" The new facility is a freestanding, two-story construction that will boast two ground-floor performance spaces, four dance studios, increased audience capacity, higher ceilings, and wheelchair accessibility. This change opens new opportunities for visibility to up-and-coming artists and organizational autonomy in this unshared building. A $150,000 capital campaign will be launched in the coming weeks to raise funds for the project."

DiP: New residency program at Gibney Dance

Gibney Dance Center launches another innovative program for New York's dance comunity--DiP, a new residency designed to provide continuous access to a studio space and production office to mid-career NYC-based dance makers. Artists will be selected for residencies of 2-4 weeks at Gibney Dance Center beginning in September 2012.

A Solo Dance by Levi Gonzalez

April 29-May 1

(Friday-Saturday, 8pm and Sunday, 6pm)

In his solo, intimacy,  Levi Gonzalez attempts to bring the practice of making into the moment  of live performance. In constructing material for this work, he  prioritizes instinct over concept, cultivating sensitivity to what  resonates with him on a visceral level. By exploring the idiosyncrasies  of his own interests in movement and performance, he builds a structure  that exposes his own personal relationship to the form. Often framing  the action with language, he establishes a directness with the spectator  that resists metaphor, while still leaving space for the engagement of  the imagination. Ultimately the work examines the intimacy of the  relationship between performer and audience, and how we navigate this  shared experience. The solo is being developed in collaboration with  dramaturg Susan Mar Landau.

Gibney Dance Center (890 Broadway, 5th Floor) is open and lookin' good!

Today, I visited one of Gina's new studios to watch Hilary Easton's rehearsal of Light and Shade--a poetic, 45-minute duet for Emily Pope-Blackman and Michael Ingle--and that's lookin' good, too. I'll be away and will miss the work's October premiere season at Baryshnikov Arts Center, but I recommend it: Information here.

Gibney Dance Center to open September 1

Choreographer Gina Gibney, artistic director of Gina Gibney Dance, today announced plans to greatly expand both her studio space and the range of programs designed to serve the rapidly growing needs of New York's dance and performance community. Her Gibney Dance Center will open on September 1.

For two decades, Gibney has maintained Studio 5-2 at 890 Broadway for company rehearsals and a full roster of professional and specialty classes. Now, with the support of Eliot Feld's Ballet Tech Foundation, Gibney has acquired two more spaces in the building, also known as The Lawrence A. Wien Center for Dance and Theater.

In addition to Studio 5-2 (renamed Studio 3), Gibney Dance Center will be home to two new studios:

Studio 1--a 36' x 36' rehearsal studio and production office designed and equipped for rehearsals and residencies for dance and theater groups

Studio 2--20' x 36' workspace for small group rehearsals, exploratory work and special creative programs; affordable for independent artists and small dance groups

Building on her long track record in community service and innovation, Gibney plans to launch two new programs:

boo-koo--a space grant program that will provide choreographers with rehearsal time and technical assistance in exchange for community give-backs, such as free workshops or performances for audience with limited exposure to the arts

One-Shot--a web-based, solo performance relay curated by Sarah Maxfield. Each participating artist receives six hours of rehearsal time at GDC, during which he or she will create a solo performance specifically for the Internet. Each web-based solo will be premiered online, and remain available in a web-based catalogue for performance viewing at any time.

THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES OPENING OF NEW REHEARSAL SPACE

Eleven Studios to be Made Available to Dance Community at Affordable Rates

The Joyce Theater Foundation announced today that it has leased new rehearsal space at 305 West 38th Street in Manhattan, formerly home of New Dance Group. The venue, renamed DANY (Dance Art New York) Studios, will further The Joyce's ongoing efforts to serve the dance community by providing affordable rehearsal space.

About the new rehearsal space, Linda Shelton, Executive Director of The Joyce Theater, said, "We are grateful to The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, along with Bloomberg, for their support of this project. Because of their generosity, it is not only possible for us to address the challenges that limited rehearsal space imposes on the dance community, but also to resuscitate this marvelous venue."

Marvin Preston, President of the Board of the New Dance Group said, "By working with The Joyce Theater, we have been able to transform this leasehold into a fully functional, conforming, sustainable, and maintainable state. The dance community will benefit greatly from The Joyce's effective management of this real, needed, valuable, and usable facility."

Consisting of eleven studios appropriate for rehearsals, auditions, classes, and workshops, DANY Studios is equipped with storage space, lounge areas, and audio/video systems appropriate for rehearsal use. It will be available seven days per weeks, from 8am until 10pm, with rental fees beginning at $5 per hour for some of the available hours.

DANY Studios will be an addition to the current rehearsal space at Joyce SoHo (155 Mercer Street), which houses three studios. It will now be possible to reserve space for both venues through one call-in line: 212-564-3808. DANY Studios is located on the second and third floors of 305 West 38th Street on Eighth Avenue NY, NY 10018.
