Catherine "Kate" Peila(Executive Director of Dance New Amsterdam)discusses the organization's current financial and legal crisis and details the international scope of DNA's work and its value to New York City.
A piece of the story that isn't told enough is the simply massive strides that Kate has made in turning around the finances of DNA. Although the situation has clearly reached a critical juncture, had it not been for Kate's herculean efforts, DNA would have almost certainly evaporated many months ago, instead of being one crisis away from being a vibrant and healthy contributor to the dance world and the downtown arts scene. It's time for the City to step up to the obligations they made in putting DNA into that space after 9/11, and returning the contribution that DNA has made to the cultural revitalization of lower Manhattan.
