Barnett's "Sound Memory"

Choreographer Julian Barnett--who recently joined me for an episode of the Body and Soul podcast--concludes the presentation of Sound Memory tonight at Danspace Project (8:30pm). The dancers--Barnett, Justin Ternullo and Hanna Kivioja--perform to an audio score from right-wing radio and old cassette tapes of hit songs and classical samples. A floor strewn with music tapes becomes a field of scattered associations and shards of the self. The dancers' bare feet somehow manage to avoid slippage and damage as impulsive and rough (sometimes roughhouse) movement speaks of raw, twisty, unresolved and perhaps unresolvable questions. The piece feels un-ironed in ways that can be, by turns, frustrating, amusing and bracing. By putting a check on your need for order, for meaning, you can begin to feel into Sound Memory and make room for a moment out of (your) control.
