Job: Danish school seeks contemporary dance specialist

The Dance Department at the Danish National School of Theatre and Contemporary Dance is looking for a subject specialist in the field of contemporary dance, as of January 1st, 2011. The position is 24 hours per week with a contract term of two years and the possibility of extension.

The department is forward-thinking and dedicated to the idea of training accomplished, individual and self-motivated students. Within a dynamic environment, we value experimentation, creativity and curiosity as a way of reaching the highest artistic standard. There is a special emphasis on somatic approaches and deep body awareness as the basis for a training that includes new and contemporary dance, improvisation, ballet, composition, music, physical theatre, pedagogy and an exposure to dance forms from other cultures.

The subject specialist refers to the Head of The Dance Department,
Jeremy Nelson. The subject specialist will be a key part of the department’s team of teachers, supervisors and Heads of the Choreography, Dance Pedagogy and Dance departments.

Responsibilities:

• To act as coach, mentor and teacher for the dance performance students.

• To contribute to the further development and enhancement of the student’s technical skill and artistic potential.

• To act as rehearsal director for rehearsals and performances of student productions.

• To be responsible for the arranging and planning of student sessions with both the physiotherapist and Alexander Technique teacher

• Liaising with the International Coordinator about student exchanges

• To assist the Head of Department with educational planning.

• To take part in meetings within the school and to assist with the organisation of examinations and evaluations.

• To accommodate a continued professional practice, a flexible work routine is allowed, making it possible to structure one’s own schedule in collaboration with the Head of the Department.

Qualifications:

• We are seeking a candidate who has extensive experience as a contemporary dancer and is a dance artist at the highest professional level.

• We are seeking a candidate with a deep knowledge of contemporary and new dance techniques; also a familiarity with more traditional dance techniques is welcome as well as a willingness to experiment with teaching methods and class formats.

• The candidate should be someone actively involved in his or her own artistic practice.

• Experience in somatic and investigative body work, improvisation and choreography a plus.

• We are seeking a candidate who has solid experience of teaching activity on the highest international level, the ability and willingness to engage in close collaborations with colleagues and students and a commitment to investing in the development of the young dancer.

Salary and terms of employment:

The position being offered is for 24 hours a week. The position begins on January 1st 2011 and is a time-limited 2-year contract with the possibility of extension.

The contract will be made on an individual basis and salaries will be fixed in compliance with the Danish Ministry of Finance regulation of June 22nd, 1994, in which the starting salary is 15.375,10 DKK per month (24 hours) and the final salary is 20.429,03 DKK per month (24 hours).
