Domestic Violence Awareness Month: Gibney Dance takes action

Gibney Dance to lead community action
for Domestic Violence Awareness Month

All through October, Gibney Dance will host events designed to provide information and increase awareness around the issue of domestic violence. These events, held at Gibney Dance Center will be free and open to the public. This initiative includes:

-- "I Am Against Violence" photo campaign, in which members of the public can volunteer to be featured.

--  Community Action (CA), a first-of-its-kind program centered on dancer-led workshops using the power of movement and creativity to empower domestic violence survivors living in shelters in New York City and beyond.
Domestic Violence Awareness Month is a time not only to recognize the significant efforts that have been made to reduce domestic violence but also to recommit ourselves to serving the critical needs of survivors and their families. Through our Community Action work, we have learned that there is a powerful synergy between domestic violence and dance that helps survivors take their whole self forward—both body and mind. We look forward to sharing with the broader community the knowledge and expertise we have gained through 12 years of work around the issue of domestic violence.
--Gina Gibney, Artistic and Executive Director of Gibney Dance

--  a discussion with Beth Silverman-Yam, Clinical Director of Sanctuary for Families

--  free yoga classes

--  coaching opportunities on work/life balance

--  a CA Open Studio featuring Gibney Dance Company

All activities will take place at Gibney Dance Center, 890 Broadway, Fifth Floor.

Participants can register for and learn more about October’s events by emailing community@gibneydance.org.

Observation, directed touch and imagery are tactics we can bring into play in order to create an environment of internal body spaciousness. Qigong is a form through which we can practice how to sustain the sensation of internal openness and energy flow while moving. When we then make a shift into improvisation, the internal space we carry with us gives rise to dancing that is easeful and generated by energetic intention. These three classes will begin with body awareness that will slide into an extended Qigong practice. We will then integrate new-found physical insights within improvisation.
Eva Karczag is an independent dance artist and educator. For the past three decades she has practiced, taught, and advocated explorative methods of dance making. She performs solo and collaborative work internationally, many of her collaborations involving links across the arts. Her performance work and her teaching are informed by dance improvisation and mindful body practices, including Qigong, the Alexander Technique (certified teacher), and Ideokinesis. She has been a member of leading groups in the field of experimental dance, including the Trisha Brown Dance Company. She has taught throughout the USA, Australia and Europe and has an MFA degree (Dance Research Fellow) from Bennington College.

Chi Kung in the park

Practice Chi Kung with Laura Shapiro:

Saturdays at 10:30am in Central Park, starting June 6th
Sundays at 4:30pm in Prospect Park, starting June 7th

Often translated as "life force energy practice," Chi Kung uses separate gentle movements, specific postures and the breath to circulate and revitalize energy, improve balance and coordination, increase flexibility, and cultivate inner strength of body, mind and spirit.

The full benefits reveal themselves with ongoing regular practice. After the movements, postures and breathing become familiar, their repetition allows the nervous system and the muscles, the mind and the emotions to calm down. Releasing tension and busy-ness, the practice of chi Kung generates feelings of peace, harmony and well-being.

Laura Shapiro is a choreographer/performer with over three decades of experience teaching people of all ages and abilities. Recent work includes teaching for Fu Yu International Foundation, DOROT Wellness Program for Seniors, Center for Kinesthetic Education (children and adults), McBurney YMCA (adults 20s-80s), private classes for groups and individuals.

ABOUT CHI KUNG

Traditionally, in China, Chi Kung/aka Qi Gong was an intrinsic aspect of martial arts, medicine and meditation. Often translated as “life force energy practice,” Chi Kung uses separate gentle movements, specific postures and the breath to circulate and revitalize energy, improve balance and coordination, increase flexibility and cultivate inner strength of body, mind and spirit. It can be adapted for every body.

The full benefits of Chi Kung reveal themselves with ongoing regular practice over an extended period of time. Once the movements, postures and breathing become familiar, their repetition allows the nervous system and the muscles, the mind and emotions to calm down, generating feelings of peace, harmony and well being, and allowing us to be more fully present.

LAURA SHAPIRO is a dancer/choreographer with over three decades of experience teaching people of all ages and ability. She currently teaches for Fu-Yu International Foundation, the Center for Kinesthetic Education, the Arthritis Foundation and McBurney YMCA as well as privately.
